Arthritis Management with Physiotherapy in NE Calgary

Living with stiff, aching joints is frustrating — but it doesn't have to mean slowing down. Here's the evidence-based approach we use to manage arthritis pain at Omega Physiotherapy.

Arthritis is the leading cause of joint pain and disability in Canadian adults. Whether it's osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, or hand, or an inflammatory condition like rheumatoid arthritis, the same principle holds: motion is medicine, and the wrong rest pattern usually makes joints worse, not better.

Our NE Calgary team uses a layered approach. Manual therapy and soft-tissue work calm the surrounding muscles that guard around painful joints. Progressive strength training — especially around the quadriceps for knees and the glutes/core for hips — offloads the joint surface and builds the support the joint actually needs.

We also pay close attention to load management. The goal isn't to stop activity; it's to find the right dose. Walking, cycling, swimming, and supervised resistance training are almost always part of the plan. Modalities like acupuncture, laser, and shockwave can be layered in when symptoms are flared.

If you've been told to 'just rest' or 'wait until it's bad enough for surgery,' that advice is outdated. Most arthritic joints can be managed for years — sometimes indefinitely — with the right rehab plan.
