Concussion care has changed dramatically. The old 'dark room until every symptom goes away' approach is now known to delay recovery and increase the risk of prolonged symptoms.
Current best practice: 24-48 hours of relative rest, then a gradual, symptom-guided return to light cognitive and physical activity, staying just below the threshold where symptoms spike.
Our NE Calgary concussion assessment includes vestibular and ocular motor testing, cervical spine evaluation (a major driver of headache and dizziness that gets missed), exercise tolerance using a Buffalo Treadmill Test, and cognitive load tolerance.
If you're more than four weeks post-concussion and still experiencing headaches, dizziness, fog, or exercise intolerance, this is treatable. Persistent post-concussion symptoms almost always have cervical, vestibular, and autonomic components — all of which respond to targeted physiotherapy.
