Common Physiotherapy Myths Debunked by Calgary Experts

From 'no pain, no gain' to 'physio is only for athletes,' we tackle the most common myths that stop NE Calgary patients from getting the care they actually need.

Myth #1: You need a doctor's referral. In Alberta, you do not — physiotherapy is a direct-access profession. Some insurance plans request a referral for reimbursement, so check your plan, but you can book with us any time.

Myth #2: 'No pain, no gain.' Modern rehab is built around graded load, not pushing through pain. There's a difference between productive discomfort and harmful pain, and your physio will coach you through it.

Myth #3: Physiotherapy is only for athletes. We treat office workers, new parents, seniors, post-surgical patients, MVA victims, and yes, athletes. Anyone with a movement-related concern benefits from a proper assessment.

Myth #4: One session should fix it. Acute issues sometimes resolve in a couple of visits, but chronic or complex problems take time. The honest answer is always given upfront at your assessment — no upselling, no padding the schedule.
